Certified OPM Band: Silent Sanctuary

Members of the Silent Sanctuary
Sweet melody? Sweet voice? Speaking of "sweet" with an "S", Silent Sanctuary is here, a five-piece Filipino band formed in 2001 who entered the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene in the year 2006.

Silent Sanctuary is very popular in music industry, because of their songs which got the taste of every Filipino. They are also categorized as one the Philippine Rock Music Groups. "Rebound", "Ikaw Lamang", "Summer Song", "Kundiman", and "Ingat Ka" are the songs included in their first album. Those songs became remarkable to the people, especially to the youth in our country who idolize them. Their songs have sweet and smooth melody. The vocalist has a lovely voice which adds a very good texture for their songs. Also, most of their songs are love songs that entice the listeners and could be able to relate on it.

The band is composed of 5 members. Raymund "Sarkie" Sarangay in lead vocals and guitars, Anjo Inacay in cello, Chino David in violin and backing vocals, Jason Rondero in bass guitar and backing vocals also, and the drummer, Allen Calixto. Each of them can be considered as a talented musician in terms of making their own genre in music. Because of their wide and creative minds, they were able to create their own style in singing and playing music to make some unique sounds. In fact, they have many songs, and all of those songs are well-known and favored by the people. Silent Sanctuary has their top 50 songs and these are the top 10 popular songs: "Ikaw Lamang", "Kundiman", "Rebound", "Kismet", "Hiling", "Maalala Mo Sana", "Ingat Ka", "14" (For Tin), "Sandali Lang", and "Summer Song".

Silent Sanctuary means "a place of refuge" where you can find comfort and strength. At first, the band has only 3 members: Norman Dellosa, Paolo Legaspi, and Allen Calixto. Norman as the vocalist and lead guitarist, Paolo as the bass guitarist, and Allen as the drummer. In 2004, they released an independently produced full length album entitled Ellipsis of the Mind. Until the year 2007 came, Sarkie replaced Norman as the lead vocalist and guitarist. During this year, they also released their second album entitled Fuchsiang Pag-ibig. "Hay Naku" is their album's first single and "Hiling" is the second one.

I've interviewed some fans of Silent Sanctuary. I asked them why they became Silent Sanctuary fanatics and what songs of that band inspired them, and here are their answers...

Those 3 people I've interviewed are members of such band in their place at the city of Taguig. Jea Rose (left side), their vocalist, Mark Anthony Sales (middle), the lead guitarist, and Ranzel Tingco (right side), the bassist of the band. They are all fans of Silent Sanctuary and they sometimes play some songs of Silent Sanctuary every time they perform in some occasions where they're being invited.

Mark Anthony told me that he became a fan of the said band when he was in high school. As far as he remembers, Silent Sanctuary became No.1 in MYX in 2004. "Hindi naman lahat ng kanta nila sumikat, dito lang sa Pilipinas. Pero tumatak 'yung karamihan nilang kanta sa mga Pilipino, kasi puro OPM," Mark said. He always listens to their songs and his favorite songs of Silent Sanctuary are "Kundiman" and "Ikaw Lamang". Actually, before my interview to them, I spotted them playing guitar and as I'm getting closer during that time, I heard them playing one of the songs of Silent Sanctuary, which is "Ikaw Lamang". This song is very remarkable for them, because this is the most popular song of Silent Sanctuary.

"Si Sarkie 'yung vocalist ng Silent Sanctuary. Ang pogi noon, crush ko nga 'yun eh," Jea Rose said. It only means that even the physical appearance of each member of Silent Sanctuary could attract audience, especially girls. But still, Jea Rose really can relate to the songs of Silent Sanctuary.

Even those in the younger age can be attracted by the songs of Silent Sanctuary, because their songs are very easy to remember and very appealing to everybody. In fact, I also had an interview to a 6-year-old girl who also knows some songs of Silent Sanctuary such as "Kundiman, "14", and "Ikaw Lamang"...

This girl is Iyanah Criszelle Sajul. Her older brothers are fans of Silent Sanctuary so she knows some of their songs. She always hear her brothers singing and she was able to remember those songs due to her subconsciousness. Maybe, she is also having LSS or what we called the Last Song Syndrome.

Most of the fans of Silent Sanctuary are in the middle age. They really love how Silent Sanctuary performs and how they sing and play their songs. They really inspire many people because of the lyrics of their songs. Even the ordinary people like those informal settlers could be able to relate in their songs because most of those songs are purely Filipino songs.

Silent Sanctuary, as musician band, plays fussy sound of songs, which makes them stand out among any other bands. And because of that kind of sound, they really catch the interest of the people. They are also able to entertain their fans and other audience to listen to their classical music.
